Dreams as a Source of Personal Insight
Research supports the hypothesis that sleep facilitates cognitive insight and creative thinking (Maquet & Ruby, 2004; Stickgold & Walker, 2004; Wagner et al., 2004; Darsaud et al., 2011). This makes it plausible that sleep also fosters personal and emotional insight, often reflected in the content of dreams. Dreams typically feature interactions between characters and vivid emotional experiences (Nielsen & Lara-Carrasco, 2007), offering a rich field for self-exploration.
In psychology and psychotherapy, dreams hold a special place, whether approached through traditional or modern methodologies. The "Traditional Interpretive Dream Approach," which dates back to Mesopotamian origins and inspired psychoanalysis, focuses on interpreting symbols in dreams to uncover hidden meanings. However, this method often distances itself from the client’s subjective, lived experience. Gestalt Therapy shifts this focus by emphasizing the individual's present-moment experience and their active participation in deriving meaning from dreams.
Dreams, like waking experiences, are deeply personal, placing the phenomenal self at their center. According to Hayrettin Kara, dreams contain hidden meanings cloaked in symbols, which must be interpreted to reveal their implicit messages. Kara describes dreams as "the symbolic narration of an unconscious reality," highlighting their potential to offer profound insights.
Neuroscientific studies further reveal that memory processes during REM sleep play a role in learning and adaptation. Existing evidence suggests that dreams may serve a primary adaptive function by enhancing our capacity for learning and integrating experiences (Isaac Roberts).
Workshop: Dreamwork in a Gestalt Art Therapy Approach
This workshop introduces participants to working with dreams through the lens of Gestalt Art Therapy. By engaging creativity, expressive techniques, and imagination, participants will connect with their dream projections and gain a deeper understanding of the “how” and “for what” behind their dreams, rather than merely exploring the “why.”
Key Features:
Practical Focus: The workshop emphasizes hands-on practice, making the experience dynamic and immersive.
Inclusive Participation: No prior experience in dreamwork, Gestalt Therapy, psychology, or art is required. Even participants who do not remember their dreams will receive guidance to engage meaningfully.
