Individuals: Anyone interested in personal growth and emotional exploration in a symbolic, supportive context.
The Process of Loss and Grief in Gestalt Art Therapy.
Presented by the Gestalt Art Therapy Centre Australia.
Facilitators: Yaro Starak & Gemma Garcia
Overview:
In psychotherapy, various theories help to understand and support individuals through the experience of loss and grief. This workshop, Working with Loss and Grief in Gestalt Art Therapy, is designed to explore these experiences as natural life processes that everyone will encounter. However, it’s important to note that this session will not address prolonged grief, trauma, or PTSD, as these issues require more specific and combined therapeutic interventions.
Workshop Description:
This engaging and experiential workshop will focus on key theories and approaches to loss and grief, with a specific emphasis on the integration of Gestalt Therapy and Art Therapy. Participants will be introduced to the SICAIDIR method, which involves working with art projections in Gestalt sessions, alongside the practical application of the Empty Chair technique.
SUMMARY
Key Gestalt Therapy concepts will be covered, including:
· The "here and now" principle, which focuses on the present moment.
· Unfinished business, where unresolved emotions or experiences related to loss are addressed.
· The Gestalt cycle of experience, which involves moving through different stages of awareness and contact to resolve emotional issues.
Through Gestalt Art Therapy, participants will learn how to provide clients with a safe space for emotional expression, fostering greater awareness of their emotions. The creative process becomes a powerful tool for individuals to navigate their grief, leading to healing, closure, and a sense of new meaning after loss.
Key Learnings:
· Understanding the nature and different types of loss, including loss of freedom (as seen during the Covid-19 pandemic), loss of loved ones, war-related losses, migration, relationship breakdowns, and loss related to sickness.
· How loss and grief manifest emotionally and the stages individuals typically move through during the grief process.
· Application of core Gestalt Therapy concepts to support clients dealing with grief.
· Introduction to the SICAIDIR method for using art projections in therapy.
· Practical use of the Empty Chair technique in working through grief.
· The role of creative expression in providing emotional relief and resolution, including how drawing, collage, and other forms of art-making can facilitate emotional expression and healing.
Hands-on Experience:
This workshop is highly interactive, offering participants the chance to create their projective pieces, such as drawings or collages, in a safe and supportive environment.
Live demonstrations will be conducted with invited volunteers, showcasing techniques and methods in real time. Importantly, this session will not involve deep emotional therapy; participants are responsible for their emotional well-being during the creative activities. The focus will be on learning and experiencing, not delving deeply into emotions.
Note:
While this workshop provides valuable insights and tools for working with loss and grief in a therapeutic context, it is not intended to substitute for intensive therapeutic work with trauma, PTSD, or prolonged grief. Participants are encouraged to seek professional support if needed for such issues.
Awareness, self-expression, and integration.
