Art Journaling

Online Event

Art journaling, from a Gestalt Art Therapy perspective, is a reflective and experiential practice that supports self-awareness, emotional expression, and personal integration.

This 2-hour workshop is open to both mental health professionals and the general public (18 years and over). Participants will engage in creative processes such as free drawing, collage, and reflective writing to explore inner experiences, emotions, and thoughts in a predominantly non-verbal and creative way. These practices support awareness in the here and now and allow unconscious material to emerge into consciousness in a safe and contained manner.

Through the art journaling process, participants can reconnect with parts of themselves that may feel fragmented, develop personal meaning, and foster a greater sense of coherence and wholeness, supporting insight and personal growth.

This event is open to professionals and the general public (18+). Mental health professionals attending the workshop will also gain practical knowledge and creative tools that can be ethically adapted and integrated into individual therapy, counselling sessions, and group work.

Needle Felting for Stress and Anxiety Relief: A Gestalt Art Therapy Perspective

Needle felting is a tactile, meditative process that involves shaping wool with a barbed needle.

From a Gestalt Art Therapy perspective, it becomes a therapeutic activity that fosters emotional healing through creativity, embodiment, and mindfulness.

The repetitive hand movement helps ground clients, release nervous energy, and bring focus to the present. This rhythmic action promotes a calming flow state, beneficial for reducing anxiety.

The creative process encourages non-verbal expression, emotional exploration, and decision-making, which support self-agency and control.

As wool shifts shape, clients practice flexibility and tolerance, engaging in playful problem-solving and letting go of perfectionism.

Through this process, unconscious projections often surface, offering opportunities for reflection and emotional integration.

Shaping wool mirrors shaping one’s inner world—transforming emotional tension into tangible forms.

In this way, needle felting supports Gestalt principles such as present-moment awareness, contact, and self-responsibility.

It becomes a powerful therapeutic tool, especially useful in trauma-informed care.
