MANDALAS a Gestalt Art Therapy approach

“My mandalas were cryptograms about the state of the self that presented itself to me each new day… I kept them as precious stones…. It was becoming more and more clear that the Mandala is the center. It is the exponent of all paths. It is the path to the center, to individuation. ”

Memories, Dreams, and Reflections. CG Jung

THE SACRED ROUND: Carl Jung's Patient Mandalas

“The Sacred Round: Carl Jung's Patient Mandalas” was the first exhibition of forty patient-created mandalas by Swiss psychoanalyst C.G. Jung, which was on view at the Oglethorpe University Art Museum from February 5 to May 6, 2012. The exhibit was courtesy of C.G. Jung Institute in Kusnacht, Switzerland

Workshop objectives:

- The artistic techniques involved in creating mandalas using a wide range of artistic materials.

- Investigate and experiment with the creation of mandalas and the process in the Gestalt Art therapy session.

- Have the opportunity to practice with this tool, because when you draw or paint your own mandala, you are making a portrait of your unconscious self in a particular moment in your life, and when you carefully observe your creation, it can provide an amazing insight in a deep level (Susanne F Fincher)

- Learn how to present this art tool to your clients

- Discover the spiritual transformative power of the mandala

- You will be able to offer options to the client to communicate in a new language. Mandala work provides a space where clients can reproduce their inner world in a safe and relaxed way.

- Practice with the integration of polarities using Mandalas.

- Investigate more about Symbols, Archetypes, and the Collective Unconscious.

· If you are a professional working with clients, during this online workshop, participants will understand how to work with Mandalas, in a Gestalt art therapy approach.

· Working with mandalas with a Gestalt approach will help the participants to understand not the "why" but the "what for" and the "how" during the creation and understanding of the Mandala.

"Here and Now" will give participants valuable awareness during this amazing process of working with the Mandalas.

· This workshop is "practical" - this means that the importance is the practice, the moment, and the experience. We will present theories but the goal is practical.

No previous experience with mandalas or in Gestalt Therapy, or in Psychology, Therapy, or Art is necessary.

This workshop will not be recorded because it will be experiential "Here and now". So there will be no later access to the contents.

KOKEDAMA Therapy©

The world in a plant

Kokedama is a traditional Japanese form of botanical art where plants are wrapped in a ball of soil, covered with moss, and bound with string.

The word "Kokedama" can be broken down into "koke" (moss) and "dama" (ball), literally translating to "moss ball." This art form goes beyond mere aesthetics and carries philosophical, emotional, and therapeutic significance.

In this workshop from the Gestalt approach and from the beautiful metaphor of the Kokedama technique you will experiment:

  • Connection to Nature: Kokedama emphasizes a close connection with nature. By working with living plants and moss, practitioners are reminded of the beauty and life force present in the natural world. This connection can bring a sense of tranquility and grounding.
  • Mindfulness and Meditation: Creating Kokedama requires focused attention and mindfulness. The process of crafting the moss ball and planting the vegetation can be meditative, helping individuals to be present at the moment and relieve stress.
  • Nurturing and Responsibility: Taking care of living plants encourages a sense of responsibility and nurturing. Watching the plants grow and thrive can give a sense of accomplishment and purpose.
  • Emotional Expression: Kokedama work will be a form of self-expression, allowing participants to create unique and personalized pieces of art that reflect their emotions, personality, and artistic taste.

Engaging in Kokedama as a practice you can experiment with therapeutic benefits. Studies have shown that spending time with plants and engaging in gardening activities can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, promoting overall mental well-being.

Environmental Awareness: Kokedama art often utilizes sustainable materials and encourages recycling and repurposing. This can foster a deeper appreciation for environmental issues and sustainable practices.

Symbolism: Kokedama can hold symbolic meaning for individuals. The act of enveloping a plant's roots in a moss ball may be seen as a representation of protection, growth, and the cyclical nature of life.

Beauty in Imperfection: Kokedama embraces the concept of wabi-sabi, an essential aspect of Japanese aesthetics, which finds beauty in imperfection and transience. Each Kokedama is unique and imperfect in its way, and this appreciation for imperfection can extend to life's ups and downs.

Mind-Body Connection: Engaging in Kokedama art can help strengthen the mind-body connection. It involves using hands to create something tangible, promoting a sense of accomplishment and physical engagement.

Social Bonding: Kokedama practiced in groups, encouraging social interactions and fostering a sense of community among enthusiasts. Sharing the experience with others can lead to the exchange of knowledge and inspiration.

This will be a "hands-on" workshop, where the "process" will be the most interesting. The "how" will be more important than the "what" or "why".

The final result is not the objective, although you will be surprised at what you can create and, above all, integrate into your "here and now"

*Please wear closed shoes and if suffering from asthma, bring a mask.

2023 Collage Art Therapy CAT© a Gestalt Approach ZOOM Online workshop

Collage Art Therapy CAT© a Gestalt Approach

ZOOM Online workshop

Collage Art therapy

The use of figurative and metaphorical language during the creation using collage techniques helps to make changes and implement new options within the client's process, without having to work directly with the confrontation of the problem or conflict. Through collage, clients objectify their conflicts to put them in a different perspective and open future channels of communication.

During this workshop, you will:

  • Know how to design the collage-work: kind of collages
  1. Paper collage – One of the more basic forms of collage. Various pieces of paper are gathered and put together to create a unique collage strictly from paper products.
  2. Photomontage – whether done by hand or with the help of a computer, a photomontage is a collage of pictures or photos.
  3. Painting collage – Gluing pieces to a canvas and then painting over and/or around those pieces on the canvas, thus creating an original and unique painting.
  4. Wood collage – Create from pieces of wood, whether it be from scraps, old furniture, crates, barrels, house parts, driftwood, branches, sticks, bark, etc.
  5. Digital collage – Using a computer to gather the visual pieces and put them together
  • Discover how this tool will support the psychological process, revealing meaningful information about the client’s inner world.
  • Collages are visual artworks that are created by selecting magazine images, textured papers, or ephemera; cutting or altering these elements; and arranging and attaching them to a support such as paper or cardboard”. This kind of creation could be compared with clients' life and patterns.
  • Uncovering the power of the creation with symbols, also the act of cutting and ripping images and gluing them together can be cathartic for some clients.
  • Offer options to the client to communicate in a new language, collage art therapy work involves unconscious levels related to archetypes and the collective unconscious.
  • Adapting this tool to the client's age and emotional development
